RAQUEL ALBARRAN

Get ready for all things “cute and creepy.”

We couldn’t be more excited to announce our newest artist in residence, Raquel Albarran.

Raquel is our first ever remote resident, working out of her home studio in the mountains of Utuado, Puerto Rico. Over her residency she’ll be exploring themes of toes, horses, amputations, roosters in the rain, smoking babies, toe plants, and fruit — guanábana, papaya, mango, green apples, guava and paw paw, to name a few.

Once a beloved member of Brooklyn’s LAND Studio and Gallery, Raquel now lives in Puerto Rico. Raquel is already off and running, creating detailed lists of needed materials and source images and now drawing every day. So far we have collected over 30 photographs of people’s toes for drawing inspiration. Toe submissions encouraged (send ‘em over)!

In May, Summertime packed our bags and flew out to visit Raquel, celebrate her birthday and bring her treasures from her beloved New York City (including a foil pig in a sombrero from Dean Millien and the Barbie dentist chair she requested). We met the whole family — Angel, Eggy and Jaquiline — over pizza and guava from their garden, got in a few toe squeezes and packed up all the beautiful work for her upcoming exhibition, You Could Die at Any Age, opening June 30th.
